Fireman's Park was developed in 1984 near the city's first brick fire station. It is a lovely green space filled with flower beds, shrubbery, winding path ways, a metal sculpture of a lumberman (but alas no fireman!) and a totem pole from 1903. The park overlooks Commencement Bay and the Port of Tacoma. There is a sad note here as the Port is home to a pulp mill. The industry is far smaller than it once was and as it diminishes so does one part of Tacoma's gritting history of logging and paper making. The park is surprising as it is rather long and filled with little twists and turns that bring you into quiet stone circles for sitting or admiring and picnic tables, shaded gravel paths and wonderful views...all with a busy city nestled close by in the back ground.
The entrance:
Tucked behind buildings and nestled quietly by Commencement Bay, the park's path lead to small garden spots and place to sit and chat or simply take in the beauty of this place:
the self-proclaimed world's tallest totem pole (in 1903)
