Have begun to read about Tacoma's history. Then yesterday spent some time in the downtown area as it was a quiet holiday weekend. Tacoma has taken it's fair share of ups and downs over the decades but it remains an interesting and diverse city. In recents times it has seen some urban renewal in the older parts of the city. As with so many large urban areas it has a number of neighborhoods. Even 'downtown' has it's sections. The city is almost evenly divided between democrats (50%) and republicans (48%)...says something about the political and economic life of this place.
I explored a small part of Pacific Street. It is home to many bistro's, the old city hall and the Fireman's Park.
Old City Hall, a beautiful old building:
The building is all angles, windows and height but with the ornate detail of another era. What deals and arguements were had inside these walls?
Right now don't know who the architect was but I will find out.
Tomorrow: the bistros on the street....
